yes cliff! i knew you'd be on top of this awesome show!!

just to clarify i can't really say with absolute certainty that it's the best (a matter of subjectivity of course) and it's not necessarily my favorite of the year either (that goes to 4/22 i think). but i feel that the argument could easily be made for it being the best and i would not argue with that person.

the jamming in this DS is light-years ahead of its time, pointing the way to the all-time heavy hitters that would come in '72 and '73.

I wouldn't argue with 11/2/69 being the "best" of the year, though 4/22 is certainly a wonder as well.

I haven't listened to it in a while so I could be mistaken, but I think 12/4/69 is the most "ahead-of-its-time" Dark Star of the year. It's like they make an effort NOT to play any of the familiar themes, and just do pure improvisation for a half-hour like they would a couple years later.

i'm gonna have to give 12/4 a listen, it's one of very few that i haven't heard in '69!

Having re-listened to 12/4/69, I have to say that overall it's a pretty weak show, and inspiration isn't really flowing in the Dark Star as much as I remembered... BUT, I have to give them credit for trying: they're really putting some extra effort into this Star, it's one of those that steadily builds and gets more intense. (It's also the longest Dark Star played at a Dead show in '69, next to 4/22 and 11/2!) So I would no longer say it's 'ahead of its time', but it is unusual for the time (no thematic jams) and well worth hearing.
